Brown Pushes Ohio Priorities During Vilsack Nomination Hearing
Ohio Ag Connection - 02/04/2021

During a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing this week, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) pressed former Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, President Biden's nominee to lead the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), on a number of Ohio priorities as the committee considered his nomination.

Brown pressed Secretary Vilsack to work with Congress to expand feeding programs in order to feed more hungry Americans who are struggling during the pandemic, and to work to support small and medium sized farmers, and help diversify food supply chains. Brown also urged the former secretary to work to strengthen protections for Lake Erie.

"I have spoken with former Secretary Vilsack about a wide range of issues and I am confident that with his experience and in-depth knowledge of the Department of Agriculture, he will be ready to lead the agency on day one. He committed to working with Congress to tackle the challenges Ohio farmers, local communities and hungry families are facing as they struggle to recover from the pandemic. The Secretary also committed to building a strong, diverse team at USDA to address the issues in rural America and across our food supply system, as well as protecting our Great Lake. I look forward to his swift confirmation," said Brown.

Brown also met with Vilsack earlier this month, following his nomination by President Biden.
