Wheat-tastic Wheat Wisdom Wednesday Webinars Continue
Ohio Ag Connection - 03/16/2021

The Michigan Wheat Program's Wheat-tastic Wheat Wisdom Wednesday Webinar series steps into the final two programs in its six-week line-up. More than 1,000 viewers have already heard from experts across the US and across the pond for updates on marketing, fall wheat management, combine residue management, soil health and amazing yields achieved in the United Kingdom.

These high-quality programs continue on March 17 and March 24 with the final two programs, which begin at 8 am on Wednesdays and run 90 minutes. Not only are the remaining two programs available via webinars, they can also be viewed Facebook. The final two programs in the Wheat Wisdom Webinar series focus on improving your wheat crop and an update on Michigan wheat research.

March 17 is an encore performance by Peter "Wheat Pete” Johnson of Ontario, Canada. Johnson's March 17 presentation is Fine Tuning Wheat. Johnson -- better known as "Wheat Pete” to Michigan growers -- has spoken at Michigan Wheat Program special events in the past, to rave reviews. He retired recently from his position as Provincial Cereal Specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture.

Johnson has a long list of leading-edge experience in the Canadian wheat industry. He helped lead the Ontario Cereal Crop Committee, chaired the Wheat Technical Working Group, and co-founded the Great Lakes Wheat Workers Group. In retirement, he now farms in Canada and consults on wheat production.

The sixth and final Wheat Wisdom Webinar is set for 8 am on Weds., March 24 and features Dennis Pennington, Michigan State University wheat specialist. Pennington will provide a Michigan Wheat Crop and Research Update.

Pennington has worked on many research projects for the Michigan Wheat Program since 2016 and coordinates all on-farm wheat research on- and off-campus for the Michigan wheat check-off and MSU. He works in partnership with breeder Eric Olson on the variety trials, which continue to grow annually both in size and data available through the high management trials. He holds BS and MA degrees and is a forages expert.

In addition to all of his research and production responsibilities, he has also authored or collaborated on several publications. Pennington provides monthly content for the Michigan Wheat Program's e-newsletter, Wheat Wisdom, and recently co-produced the just-released Michigan Wheat 101 publication, which should be hitting grower mailboxes very soon.

At the beginning of each webinar, Michigan Wheat Program executive director Jody Pollok-Newsom will provide an update on the Michigan Wheat Program. Terry Henne from WSGW will emcee and introduce each program. Close-out will include time for a question-and-answer session. There is 1.5 CCA and 1 RUP credits for each workshop -- so long as participants attend on the Michigan Wheat Program/MSU Extension Zoom link and take the survey at the end to enter their information. The webinars may also be viewed on Facebook Live, but there are no credits available for those viewers.

To register for the Michigan Wheat Program/MSUE Zoom link, visit www.miwheat.org and look at the "What's Hot” box on the left. Register there and you will receive an email with the link and instructions to access the Zoom webinar on the Monday prior to the event.

The Michigan Wheat Wisdom Webinars are also broadcast live via Facebook. Check in through your Facebook account and watch at Michigan Wheat or MSU Extension Field Crops. Or in a partnership with Terry Henne and WSGW, view the webinar at the Facebook pages of WSGW Radio, Farm Service 790 or 94.5 The Moose. Neither CCA nor RUP credit are available for the sessions when viewed on Facebook Live. In order to get the credits, you must participate via Zoom.

As is customary, the Michigan Wheat Program's 2021 Winter Wheat Wisdom Webinars will be free of charge to Michigan wheat farmers and friends of the Michigan wheat industry. Advance registration is required, to ensure you will receive the link the Monday prior to the event. Visit www.miwheat.org and register under the "What's Hot” link. In a special agreement with some presenters from this 2021 Wheat Wisdom Wednesday Webinar series, the recorded programs may be viewed after the airing date at www.miwheat.org by clicking on the Education tab and then the Previous Events tab. This location also provides videos and handout materials from all prior Michigan Wheat Winter Annual Meetings and Summer Field Meetings.

The Michigan Wheat Program is funded by nearly 8,000 farmers who grow wheat in 50 of Michigan's 83 counties. The Michigan Wheat Program board seeks to promote the state's wheat industry by funding and supporting the strategic priorities of wheat farmers working with input suppliers, seed producers, millers, end users and consumers. Research on wheat production practices and grower education has been a continued focus for the organization. For more information on the Michigan Wheat Program visit its website at www.miwheat.org.
